Use of natural gas in Finland
Natural gas satisfies around 11 per cent of Finland's total energy requirement. Gasum sold a total of 45.2 TWh of natural gas in Finland in 2006.
Combined heat and power generation (CHP) in industry and municipal power plants accounts for 70% of the gas consumed. Other major applications are condensation electricity and district heating production and various industrial processes. Industry uses natural gas for a variety of heating and drying processes, including the production of hydrogen as a raw material.
The use of natural gas by private households in Finland is much lower than in central Europe. Around 3,000 private homes have gas-fired central heating.
