Gasum is expanding and developing the Finnish natural gas transmission network
Network expansion takes place through the construction of new pipelines. This helps increase the area with access to the benefits of natural gas. For new pipelines to be constructed there needs to be enough use for natural gas in the area so that the investment is profitable.
Gasum is also developing the existing network to ensure sufficient transmission capacity and supply reliability for current users. Transmission capacity can be increased through the construction of parallel pipelines or the replacement of existing pipelines.
Gasum is responsible for the planning and construction work involved in natural gas network expansion and maintenance. Environmental and safety issues are taken into consideration from the very first steps in planning and construction.
New natural gas pipeline sections are under construction in municipalities around the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and in Kangasala, central Finland
Gasum is constructing a new natural gas pipeline from Mäntsälä to Siuntio to strengthen the transmission network in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Pipeline construction is already underway and the section is due to be operational in autumn 2011. The pipeline will pass through Mäntsälä, Hyvinkää, Tuusula, Nurmijärvi, Vihti, Lohja and Siuntio and will be 90km long. It will increase the capacity to supply natural gas for the growing needs of the area. The pipeline construction will also enable the launch of natural gas supply to Nurmijärvi and Vihti, which are yet to have access to the gas distribution network.
Gasum is also constructing natural gas pipelines in municipalities surrounding Tampere. The route of the new section will pass from Lempäälä, south of Tampere, eastwards towards Sahalahti, Kangasala. Around 34km in length, the pipeline connection will increase capacity to transmit natural gas to Kangasala and help supply natural gas to users including food production facilities in Sahalahti.
