Gasum is the natural gas transmission network system operator in Finland. Gasum owns the steel pipelines needed for natural gas transmission and is responsible for network maintenance and development.

The Finnish natural gas transmission network

Natural gas is transmitted to sites close to where natural gas is being used along underground transmission pipelines. These pipelines are laid at a depth of 1-2 metres and marked with signposts along the way. As well as the pipelines, the transmission network also includes valve stations, compressor stations and pressure reduction stations located at natural gas delivery points.

The natural gas pipeline network covers the southeastern and southern parts of Finland and totals around 1,200km in length. Preventative maintenance helps ensure the transmission network remains safe and reliable.

The network is monitored around the clock

The central control room of the transmission system is located at Gasum's Natural Gas Centre in Kouvola. Data transmission systems are used to gather all data related to natural gas transmission and use at the central control room. This data is then used to monitor and control the status of the natural gas transmission system.

The central control room is staffed 24/7 throughout the year. If necessary, control room staff contact customers regarding issues related to natural gas use. If there is a problem, they mobilise a maintenance team to address the abnormality and inform customers and authorities.
