Warmth and light to everyday living

Gasum brings the diverse advantages of natural gas within the reach of an entire nation. As well as being environmentally friendly, natural gas is economical and easy to use. Natural gas is also the most important district heating fuel. The uniform heat delivered by natural gas can also be enjoyed, for example, in front of a gas fireplace, and the outdoor terrace season can be extended, if desired, with an infra-red heater. In addition, yards or gardens are seen in an entirely new light when illuminated with stylish glass lamps.

One significant subarea is transport use; natural gas saves both euros and the environment as an alternative fuel for vehicles. It’s no wonder, therefore, that for more and more Finns, natural gas is truly the natural choice as a household energy solution.

Almost half the population of Finland lives within the natural gas catchment area.  Most of them enjoy the benefits of natural gas by district heating. Natural gas accounts for around a third of the fuel used in district heat production in Finland.

About 3,000 private homes have gas-fired central heating. This fairly small number is a result of wide spread district heating. In the Helsinki area, there are around 30,000 natural gas homes fitted with natural gas cookers. Use of natural gas by private households in Finland is increasing but is still much lower than in central Europe.

Gasum is working to increase the use of natural gas as a transport fuel. Following amended legislation that come into effect at the start of 2004, natural gas  powered vehicles are now treated in the same way as petrol - driven vehicles for taxation purposes. The change in taxation practice will make the use of natural gas a much more attractive option in delivery vehicles, taxis and cars. Gasum seeks to price natural gas as a transport fuel at around 60% of the price of conventional liquid transport fuels.

In recent years Gasum has invested heavily in public natural gas filling stations. Currently there are five filling stations in Finland: two in Helsinki,  and one each in Tampere, Kouvola and Kotka. There is also a refuelling station in Hamina, run by ST1 and Hamina Energia. The plan is to increase the number of stations to 30 by the year 2010.
There are 42 local distribution companies in Finland, among one of them being Gasum Paikallisjakelu Oy. Gasum Paikallisjakelu serves customers in Kotka, Porvoo, Helsinki, Riihimäki, Kirkkonummi, Siuntio and Lohja.

Gasum Energiapalvelut Oy is an expert in building distribution pipelines, as well as installation, maintenance and appliance services.
