Effortless access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for on-land and offshore uses
Gasum sells liquefied natural gas (LNG) for gas engine product development and testing purposes, industrial uses, for use as a vehicle and vessel fuel as well as a reserve fuel for biogas and natural gas. LNG is transported in special tank trailers, so the usage sites do not need to be located in the vicinity of the natural gas network. Gasum also exports LNG to Sweden and Norway.
Gasum has an LNG production plant in the Kilpilahti industrial area in Porvoo. Completed in June 2010, the facility produces around 20,000 tonnes of LNG a year. There is also a product warehouse of around 2,000 cubic metres in the plant area.
Clean fuel – cleaner sea
Gasum has made a commitment to promote the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a shipping fuel. In the initial stage the aim is to achieve the use of LNG as a fuel for coastal ferries, with a further aim to launch its more extensive use in Baltic Sea shipping.
LNG burns cleanly in engines. LNG's low emissions in comparison with other fuels speak in favour its increased use in maritime areas that are in need of protection.
The most economical way to access the amounts of LNG required by small tonnage vessels is to refuel directly from a tanker lorry. The refuelling of larger vessels takes place using bunkering barges or fixed bunkering stations.
Safe to use
If there is a leak, LNG immediately becomes vaporised. Vaporised gas is lighter than air, having only approximately half the density of air. In the liquid form LNG will not explode. Its ignition temperature is higher than that of oil-based fuels. In the gasified form LNG cannot be released into water or collect in vessel bilges.
