For cleaner transport
Finland is commited to reach the renewable transport fuels target of 20% by 2020. Concrete solutions for the promotion of cleaner transport are already offered today by natural gas and biogas. Compared with other technologies such as electric vehicles, gas vehicles represent technology that is already in use. This means vehicles as clean as battery electric cars are already available.
Biogas and natural gas are particularly suitable for fuelling heavy vehicles such as buses and delivery and waste management vehicles.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is clean energy. It is a low-emission fuel containing no sulphur, dust or heavy metals. Carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas powered vehicles (NGVs) are around 25% less than from petrol-driven vehicles. NGVs do not cause any particulate emissions, which is a major advantage over diesel vehicles.
CNG and processed biogas consist of the same substance, methane.
Processed biogas is an excellent vehicle fuel from the environmental perspective. It originates 100% from Finnish waste streams outside the food chain. The most important advantage of biogas and natural gas is, however, to do with local emissions. You can find more information about biogas here.
