Customers will now be able to spot Ålandsmejeriet Finland Ab Oy products on the basis of the biogas label. The dairy company Ålandsmejeriet has its own biogas plant that produces Finnish biogas from the byproducts of its production facility. The company uses biogas to make all of its dairy products, such as cheeses, butters and yoghurts, for Finnish and Swedish consumers. The dairy processes around 15 million liters of milk a year.
Ålandsmejeriet products made with biogas now have the right to carry the biogas label that is administered by Gasum and shows consumers that the products are made with sustainable energy. Launched in spring 2015, the biogas label communicates to consumers that the product was made responsibly with 100% Finnish and renewable energy. Biogas is a Finnish biofuel that is always produced from fully renewable raw materials.
”We want to operate with environmental responsibility. The fact that our products now carry the biogas label makes them even more desirable. Biodegradable waste generated in cheesemaking is converted in our own biogas plant into heat and steam needed in our production processes. Byproducts from dairy production are now used by us instead of the annual total of 250,000 liters of oil that used to be required. At the same time our waste management transport has been reduced by 70,000 km. The introduction of the biogas plant has cut our carbon dioxide emissions by 87%,” Ålandsmejeriet Managing Director Johannes Snellman.

Using biogas in production and communicating this with the biogas label helps increase consumer awareness. The biogas label shows that the company aims to efficiently reduce the carbon footprint of its energy use. The biogas label is a trademark owned and issued by Gasum.
