The energy company Lohjan Energiahuolto Loher is adding 100% Finnish biogas to its energy portfolio. From now on Loher will cover peak consumption periods in a cost effective and environmentally friendly manner with Finnish biogas produced from biodegradable waste.
Finnish biogas produced from waste will make Loher’s heat production even more environmentally friendly. The company uses energy sources including woodchips and waste heat from industrial processes in its district heat production and is a shareholder of the bioheat company Lohjan Biolämpö Oy. The introduction of biogas supports the Loher objective of becoming a carbon dioxide-free energy company.
”The City of Lohja is involved in the Carbon Neutral Municipalities (HINKU) project and therefore also highly committed to cuts in carbon dioxide emissions. At Loher we are determined to contribute toward the achievement of these objectives throughout our operations,” says Loher Managing Director Markus Tamminen.
”Our cooperation with Loher is a major step in the development of the biogas market as the company has for a long time been a forerunner in environmentally friendly energy solutions. Biogas is based on the circular economy and efficient use of resources and therefore an excellent way to the make the carbon footprint of heat production even smaller,” says Gasum Sales Manager Timo Jokila.
Loher will use biogas to replace natural gas usage, and the annual volume supplied under the biogas agreement between Gasum and Loher is the 4,000 MWh. The switch to biogas will cut Loher's emissions by around 800 tonnes. This corresponds to the emissions generated by driving a car for around 6 million kilometers.
Biogas is a Finnish biofuel that is made from biodegradable waste and injected into the gas network from Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti and, from 2016 onwards, also from the new Riihimäki biogas facility. Biogas is a versatile energy source sold to industry, service providers, heat and power production, homes and restaurants using gas cookers, and for use as a road vehicle fuel.
