Porvoon Energia to biogas partner of Gasum

Gasum and Porvoon Energia have signed an agreement on biogas cooperation. The switch to biogas will enable Porvoon Energia to cover peak periods in district heat consumption in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner with a 100% Finnish biofuel produced from waste and increase the rate of renewables to almost 100% in its heat production.

Porvoon Energia has joined the Biogas Certificate system launched for the Finnish natural gas network. In this context, an agreement on the purchase of Biogas  Certificates was signed between Porvoon Energia and Gasum. One Biogas Certificate is issued for each biogas energy unit injected into the natural gas transmission network.

Gasum biogas is produced from waste and, following purification, injected into the gas network in Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti. The raw materials of Gasum biogas are 100% Finnish and renewable, and biogas is suitable without any additional investments for all the same uses as natural gas.

The biogas partnership with Gasum enables Porvoon Energia to increase the share of environmentally friendly heat production without additional investments in current power production capacity. The volume covered by the Biogas Certificate agreement signed between the companies totals 12 GWh for 2015.

– In line with our values, at Porvoon Energia we’re taking systematic measures to reduce our ecological footprint. We invest in environmentally friendly energy production because the only way to reduce the burden on the environment is through energy savings and quality management. Gasum’s Biogas Certificates have an excellent fit with our environmentally friendly approach. At the same time we’ll able to further increase our renewables share with 100% Finnish biogas, says Development Manager Jukka Rouhiainen from Porvoon Energia.

– I’m happy about our biogas partnership with Porvoon Energia. Biogas is based on circular economy and therefore a sustainable way to increase the share of renewable energy sources. Porvoon Energia has made an exceptional effort in emission cuts and increased the share of renewables in heat production. Our cooperation is a good example of the versatility of gas. Our agreement will further support the development of the biogas market, says Jukka Metsälä, Head of Biogas and Transport Solutions, Gasum.

As well as for heat and power production, Gasum sells biogas for transport use, to industrial facilities producing consumer goods and to service providers. A gas network connection makes it very easy to start using biogas.
