Skangas and Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta sign agreement on supply of LNG for hydrogen and energy production

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) company Skangas and the nickel chemical and nickel metal manufacturer Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta Oy (NNH) have signed an agreement on the supply of LNG to the Harjavalta Industrial Park, Finland. NNH will buy LNG for the production of hydrogen used in its production processes as well as for energy production.

This agreement will result in NNH replacing heavy fuel oil and naphtha usage with LNG. This change will improve the efficiency of both hydrogen and energy production and at the same time reduce the company’s carbon dioxide emissions.

LNG will be delivered to the Harjavalta plant by road tanker from the Skangas Pori LNG terminal to be completed in autumn 2016. NNH will have an LNG reception terminal and storage tank constructed at the Harjavalta Industrial Park. Before being used, LNG will be regasified on the site.

LNG is an environmentally friendly fuel and provides industrial operators with access to a natural energy gas outside the gas pipeline network. LNG can replace the use of oil-based fuels in industry, energy production as well as shipping and road transport and therefore help achieve considerable reductions in the particulate, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from these activities.
