One of the largest providers of steel and metals distribution and production services in Northern Europe, BE Group Oy Ab will begin to manufacture steels and metals using 100% Finnish Gasum biogas made from local biodegradable waste at its Lahti facility. BE Group Oy Ab will buy the biogas from Lahti Energy. BE Group is the first company in Finland to offer its customers ecological and environmentally friendly steel and metal products made with biogas.
”We specialize in the pre-processing of steel and want to provide our customers with a more environmentally friendly service. As a major purchaser we’re an attractive cooperation partner for steel producers and customers alike. Our customers benefit from a flexible purchasing process and products tailored to their needs. We want to be a forerunner and lead the way for other enterprises in our sector. That’s why we want to make products made with biogas available to our customers,” says BE Group Quality and Environmental Manager Esa Koivisto.
”It’s great that we’re able to launch biogas cooperation with BE Group, which operates in a segment that’s new to us – the steel industry. It’s nice to see that there’s demand for 100% Finnish, local and environmentally friendly biogas in the manufacturing industry as well. Buyers of steel products are also more environmentally aware these days and want to make ecological choices. BE Group can now lead the way and offer its customers steel and metal products made with biogas processed from biodegradable waste. At the same time the company will reduce its carbon dioxide and local emissions by using biogas processed from waste in its manufacturing process,” says Jani Arala, Senior Manager, Sales, Biogas Solutions, from Gasum.
Biogas is a Finnish biofuel that is always produced from fully renewable raw materials. Gasum processes waste and produces biogas at seven biogas plants located in Turku, Vehmaa, Honkajoki, Huittinen, Kuopio, Oulu and, from late 2016, also in Riihimäki. The biogas plant under construction in Riihimäki was listed as one of the Finnish Government’s key projects in February 2016. Gasum also produces biogas with its partners in Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti. In the future Gasum will produce an annual total of more than 300 GWh of 100% Finnish biogas and process a total of 425,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste a year.
