The nationwide Biotehdas chain now becomes part of Gasum’s biogas business. The transaction was completed by Gasum Ltd and Taaleri Private Equity Funds Ltd within the anticipated timeframe.
The acquisition strengthens Gasum’s strategic objective to actively develop biogas production and the biogas market in Finland. The investment enables Gasum to improve access to biogas, particularly among users outside the gas pipeline network.
Biotehdas has biogas plants in Huittinen, Kuopio, Oulu and Honkajoki, and will complete the construction of a plant in Riihimäki in summer 2016. These facilities process an annual total of 275,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste such as biowaste from homes and industry as well as sludge from wastewater purification plants. Their annual production of biogas totals around 180 GWh. Biotehdas has 18 employees, and all of them will continue as Gasum Group employees.
At the moment Gasum injects biogas into the gas network from Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti, with the volume injected in 2015 amounting to 76.5 GWh. Gasum also signed an agreement on the acquisition of the full shareholding of Biovakka Oy in February. Biovakka has biogas plants in Turku and Vehmaa.
