Fazer Visitor Centre in Vaarala, Vantaa, is heated with 100% Finnish biogas made from food waste. The heating system of the Visitor Centre is based on 300 tonnes of waste generated annually in Fazer’s production being recycled into biogas.
Fazer is a forerunner in responsibility in all of its operations and regularly achieving top ratings in Finland’s brand valuation studies. Opened in October, the new Vaarala Visitor Centre is heated in an environmentally friendly manner using biogas produced by recycling waste from Fazer's own production processes. Using renewable biogas in heating helps reduce Fazer’s annual emissions by an amount corresponding to the emissions from driving a car for more than 600,000 km. In addition to the Visitor Centre, Fazer uses biogas in the manufacture of the Alku porridges at its Lahti mill.
”It’s great to see Fazer switch to biogas. Fazer is one of the most responsible companies in Finland, and biogas is one way for it to demonstrate this responsibility in practice. This also shows how broad the range of uses for biogas is,” says Jani Arala, Senior Manager, Sales, Biogas Business, from Gasum.
Gasum seeks to increase the utilization of biogas and amount of food produced with biogas in Finland through its operations. This makes it easier for consumers to make increasingly environmentally friendly choices and for enterprises to invest in eco-efficiency and renewable energy sources.
Gasum biogas is a Finnish biofuel that is always produced from fully renewable raw materials. Biogas is a versatile energy source sold to industry, service providers, heat and power production, homes and restaurants using gas cookers, and for use as a road vehicle fuel. Gasum processes waste and produces biogas at seven biogas plants located in Huittinen, Honkajoki, Kuopio, Oulu, Turku, Vehmaa and, from late 2016, also in Riihimäki. Gasum also produces biogas with its partners in Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti.
