Gasum will open an LCNG filling station intended particularly for heavy-duty vehicles by the Tuontiväylä road close to the Port of Turku in late September 2016. The specific opening date of the station will be known once progress is made on the construction site. Below are some conceptual drawings of Turku's first gas filling station constructed in the immediate vicinity of the port.
Gasum is strongly committed to the development of gas vehicle use. The demand for clean and affordable road fuel gas is increasing sharply all the time, and opportunities to switch to gas as a road fuel are further improved by the expanding supply of gas vehicles and the growing station network. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is currently used to fuel buses, cars and vans.
Gasum applied for Connecting Europe Facility support to explore the opportunities to construct an LNG/LCNG refueling station network and the deployment of four pilot stations intended specifically for heavy-duty vehicles in Turku, Helsinki, Vantaa and Jyväskylä. The EU support granted at €2.65 million makes it possible to also provide heavy-duty vehicles with access to natural gas in its liquefied form (LNG). The support accounts for 50% of the total investment. Expected to cost around €5.3 million in total, the project contributes to the TEN-T Core Network, the implementation of the objectives of Directive 2014/94/EU in Finland and the development of the market for alternative propulsion systems in road transport. The infrastructure being constructed will also enable the use of liquefied biogas in heavy-duty transport in the future.
Emissions from vehicles running on natural gas are lower than those from gasoline and diesel. Gasum biogas is 100% renewable and 100% Finnish and the only road fuel sold in Finland that has been awarded the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol as well as the Nordic Ecolabel. Gas is also an inexpensive transport fuel.
Gasum is actively developing the biogas and natural gas filling station network and aims to increase the number of Gasum-owned stations by 35 new stations in the next ten years.
Terminology: *LNG = liquefied natural gas **CNG = road fuel gas (biogas and natural gas as options) ***LCNG = CNG filling station with gas stored as LNG
