The Turku gas filling station was opened for gas vehicle fill-ups on Wednesday October 26, 2016 at Tuontiväylä, Turku. This is the first gas filling station in Finland intended for cars, commercial vehicles as well as heavy-duty road vehicles.
Gasum has opened an LNG/LCNG filling station by Tuontiväylä road in Turku. Vehicles can be filled up on natural gas as well as biogas at the new station. Compressed natural gas and biogas (CNG/CBG) can be used as a fuel for cars, delivery vehicles, waste management vehicles and buses, while liquefied natural gas and biogas (LNG/LBG) are suitable for heavy-duty road vehicles.
The demand for clean and affordable road fuel gas is increasing sharply all the time, and opportunities to switch to gas as a vehicle fuel are further improved by the expanding supply of gas vehicles. Gasum is strongly committed to the development of gas vehicle use and will construct 35 new filling stations over the next ten years. The development of the gas infrastructure is vital for the expansion of gas vehicle use, and a comprehensive network will enable seamless driving on gas around Finland. There are currently 26 gas filling stations in Finland.
As well as being a low-cost alternative, gas is also an excellent road fuel choice from the environmental perspective. Carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles running on natural gas are around 20% lower than those from gasoline and diesel. Biogas is a 100% Finnish and renewable fuel that does not generate any carbon dioxide emissions at all when used. Biogas is the only road fuel sold in Finland that has been awarded the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol as well as the Nordic Ecolabel. Biogas is produced in Finland from biodegradable waste sourced from homes, retail outlets and industry.
Gasum has received Connecting Europe Facility support to explore the opportunities to construct an LNG/LCNG refueling station network and the deployment of four pilot stations intended specifically for heavy-duty vehicles in Turku, Helsinki, Vantaa and Jyväskylä. In addition to the Turku filling station now opened, an LNG filling station in Vuosaari, Helsinki, has been operational since August. The Vantaa and Jyväskylä stations will be completed in 2017.
The Turku gas filling station is located by Tuontiväylä road. The official opening of the gas filling station will take place at the opening seminar on Monday November 7, 2016.
Terminology:
*LNG = liquefied natural gas **CNG = road fuel gas (biogas and natural gas as options) ***LCNG = CNG filling station with gas stored as LNG
