Gas filling station network expanding

The energy company Gasum is expanding its gas filling station network to Hämeenlinna next year. Targeted at cars, the new compressed natural gas (CNG) and biogas (CBG) filling station will be constructed by Paroistentie road in the immediate vicinity of the Helsinki-Tampere motorway. CNG and CBG suitable for cars and delivery vehicles will be available from the filling station. Gasum will construct 35 new filling stations over the next ten years.

The first gas filling station in the immediate vicinity of the Port of Turku was also opened by Gasum this week. In addition to Hämeenlinna, next year stations will be opened in locations including Turku, Pori and the Helsinki region. Information about progress made in these projects will be provided as soon as possible. The new gas filling stations will be located on central sites, with the main focus being on urban areas and transport nodes. There are currently 26 gas filling stations in Finland (see map).

”We’re very happy to be able to open a filling station with a great location in Hämeenlinna. There’s interest in the area in gas as a vehicle fuel and local players such as the precious metals company Kultakeskus, the City of Hämeenlinna, the Hämeenmaa Cooperative Society and the local energy company Elenia Lämpö have facilitated our progress with this project,” says Jussi Vainikka, Business Development Manager, Biogas, Gasum.

Gas infrastructure development plays key role for increased use of gas as road vehicle fuel

The demand for clean and affordable road fuel gas is increasing sharply all the time, and opportunities to switch to gas as a vehicle fuel are further improved by the expanding supply of gas vehicles. Gasum is strongly committed to the development of gas vehicle use. Gasum will construct 35 new filling stations over the next ten years.

As well as being a low-cost alternative, gas is also an excellent road fuel choice from the environmental perspective. Carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles running on natural gas are around 20% lower than those from gasoline and diesel. Biogas is a 100% Finnish and renewable fuel that does not generate any carbon dioxide emissions at all when used. Biogas is the only road fuel sold in Finland that has been awarded the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol as well as the Nordic Ecolabel. Biogas is produced in Finland from biodegradable waste sourced from homes, retail outlets and industry.
