HelB buses run on biogas in Helsinki Metropolitan Area

The bus company Helsingin Bussiliikenne Oy (HelB) will use renewable 100% Finnish biogas made from biodegradable waste to fuel its gas buses operating in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area during 2017. Following a competitive bidding process for an environmental bonus, biogas was selected by Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) for Helsinki region bus services. Carbon dioxide emissions will be cut by an annual total of 1,367 tonnes thanks to gas buses running on biogas in Helsinki region bus services.

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area gas bus fleet will run on renewable biogas in 2017. The bus company Helsingin Bussiliikenne Oy (HelB) will use 100% Finnish biogas made from biodegradable waste to replace natural gas as a bus fuel.

The annual total of energy supplied under the biogas agreement will be around 8 GWh. Fueling buses on gas already helps achieve emission cuts – and with biogas the reductions in carbon dioxide emissions will be considerable. HelB’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will be cut by around 1,367 tonnes when 600,000 kg of biogas is used to fuel gas buses. This corresponds to the emissions generated by driving a gasoline-fueled car for around 11 million kilometers.

“This is not the first successful entry of biogas in HSL’s competitive biddings for the environmental bonus, which is proof of this renewable and 100% Finnish fuel being a cost-effective way to reduce emissions. It makes sense to use various types of biodegradable waste for the energy-efficient production of biogas and use it as a clean road vehicle fuel,” says Gasum Business Development Manager for Biogas Jussi Vainikka.

Gasum biogas is a Finnish biofuel that is produced from fully renewable raw materials. Biogas is a versatile energy source sold for use as a road vehicle fuel, to industry, service providers, heat and power production as well as homes and restaurants using gas cookers. Biogas has been awarded the Nordic Ecolabel and road fuel biogas also the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol.
