Finnish Novita knitting yarns now made with 100% Finnish biogas

The factory of the Finnish hand-knitting yarn manufacturer Novita Oy has switched to 100% Finnish biogas in the finishing of the yarns. The biogas used is produced by Gasum and delivered to the factory by KSS Energia.

Novita Oy is a Finnish family-owned company and the largest hand-knitting yarn spinner in the Nordic region. Founded in Helsinki in 1928, this autumn the company switched from natural gas to biogas in the finishing of its yarns. The Novita factory located in Koria, Southeast Finland, produces almost a million kilos of yarn – enough for around 10 million balls of yarn for knitters every year. The Novita yarn family has been awarded the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol by the Association of Finnish Work.

The Koria factory has a long history of investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency. For example, the factory uses electricity from wind power, and the heat generated in the dyeing process is recovered and used for heating the water needed in the dyeing facility. Therefore it was a natural choice to switch to 100% Finnish biogas in the yarn production process.

“Novita is determined to be a responsible enterprise that seeks to develop its operations with respect for environmental values. We have therefore invested in renewable energy, energy efficiency and minimizing packaging material,” says Novita Managing Director Daniela Yrjö-Koskinen.

More and more companies switching to 100% Finnish biogas in their production

Using biogas in production provides significant financial as well as environmental savings. Gasum biogas is a 100% Finnish biofuel made from 100% renewable feedstocks and has been awarded the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol as well as the Nordic Ecolabel.

“Biogas is an unbeatable fuel as regards affordability and environmental friendliness. Therefore it’s great to see more and more companies realizing this and switching to biogas in their production. The emission reduction achieved every time a production facility switches to biogas is a step towards a cleaner tomorrow,” says Gasum Sales Manager Mikko Simola.

Gasum’s Finnish biogas plants are located in Huittinen, Honkajoki, Kuopio, Oulu, Riihimäki, Turku and Vehmaa. Gasum also produces biogas with its partners in Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti.
