The Finnish energy company Gasum introduced a totally new way of pricing road fuel in January. New private individuals getting a gas car in early 2017 have been able to fill up at a fixed monthly price of €89 for biogas and €69 for natural gas. The campaign has been received very well, and a decision has been made to extend it until June 2017. The continuously growing filling station network is increasing interest in switching to gas as a road vehicle fuel around Finland.
Gasum was the first operator in Finland to sell fuel at a fixed monthly price. Launched in January 2017, the campaign has encouraged hundreds of people to switch to gas over the past couple of months, which means a major increase in Finland's gas car fleet within a very short period as the total number of gas cars currently on Finland's roads is less than 2,200.
Customers switching to gas can choose between 100% Finnish biogas for €89 and natural gas for €69 per month. Biogas is the only 100% Finnish biofuel with biodegradable waste from homes, retail outlets and industry utilized in its production. Biogas is also the only road fuel sold in Finland that has been awarded the Made in Finland Key Flag Symbol as well as the Nordic Ecolabel. Jani Arala, Senior Manager, Sales, Biogas, from Gasum foresees strong growth in the use of biogas and natural gas in the near future:
“We’re received a lot of positive feedback from consumers, car dealers as well as importers of various car makes. The demand for gas cars has increased during our current campaign, and we’re hoping that more and more consumers will opt for a more environmentally friendly fuel for their car in the future,” Arala says.
Gasum will expand its gas filling station by four stations during this spring and summer. The new stations are under construction in Hämeenlinna, Pori, Jyväskylä and Petikko, Vantaa. Plans are also underway for several other sites to be constructed during 2017 in areas including the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Turku, Jyväskylä, Oulu and Lahti, and Gasum will open a total of 35 new filling stations in the next few years. At the moment there are 28 filling stations in Finland.
”The fixed monthly price not only makes fuel costs low but also enables consumers to anticipate their annual spending on fuel. The campaign encourages more and more private and especially business customers to switch to gas and has therefore resulted in a major increase in the sales of the gas-fueled Škoda Octavia in the first months of the year. A gas-fueled car in now a really sensible low-emission alternative,” Škoda Marketing and Product Manager Jussi Kostiainen points out.
