FREJA starts road transport with environmentally friendly LBG truck in collaboration with Gasum

Since the beginning of December 2018, biogas has been used to fuel FREJA’s transport in Finland. FREJA has started semi-trailer transport collaboration with Gasum by running deliveries with the Iveco Stralis NP tractor unit. The collaboration is related to a study carried out under the CIVITAS ECCENTRIC project co-funded by the EU, which produces research data on the use of gas in heavy-duty transport. The CIVITAS ECCENTRIC project is developing a clean mobility system by testing biogas vehicles and the increased use of biogas in logistics.

”Our operating range is around 1,000 km and Gasum filling stations can be found in locations including Turku, the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Jyväskylä, so fill-ups are easy along our transport route,” says Transport Coordinator Antti Setälä from FREJA.

”It’s great that frontrunner enterprises such as FREJA make environmentally friendly fuel choices as it’s important to cut heavy-duty road transport emissions. The transport use of LBG enables considerable emission reductions, and this project helps cut CO2 and fine particulate emissions in the Turku region,” says Jani Arala, Senior Manager, Sales, Traffic, from Gasum.

”This study provides our sector with research data so that even more operators would include gas-fueled vehicles in their fleet,” Setälä continues.

Using environmentally friendly biogas to fuel vehicles makes it possible to cut the greenhouse gas emissions generated over the fuel life cycle by up to 85% compared with traditional fuels. Renewable biogas is produced from feedstocks including food waste generated in homes and retail outlets, sewage sludge and industrial by-products. Biogas production also represents the circular economy at its best as the organic matter created as a by-product can be utilized as environmentally friendly recycled nutrients by local farms.

The CIVITAS ECCENTRIC project was launched to develop a smart and clean mobility system. The first Finnish CIVITAS city, Turku aims for carbon neutrality through measures including electrifying public transport and expanding the use of biofuels. Launched in September 2016, the EU co-funded CIVITAS ECCENTRIC tests biogas vehicles and the increased use of biogas in logistics. Through the project, Gasum wants to verify the benefits of gas for heavy-duty transport and the environment. The CIVITAS ECCENTRIC project enables this piloting until 2020.
