Starting in the end of December 2020, biowaste in the Helsinki region will be turned into local biogas following the completion of Gasum’s biowaste transfer station in the Vantaa district of Viinikkala. The biowaste transfer station has the capacity to receive 34,000 tonnes of solid and sludge biowaste a year. Gasum’s biogas plants will process the biowaste into enough biogas for the tanks of around 2,000 gas vehicles and into recycled fertilizers for the use of farmers. The biowaste transfer station will help Gasum, in partnership with other operators, to promote the implementation of the circular economy in the Helsinki region.
Completion of Gasum’s biowaste transfer station in Vantaa promotes and boosts the implementation of the circular economy in the Helsinki region as the station has the capacity to process large volumes of solid and sludge biomass. Gasum aims to increase biogas production capacity and to this end requires large volumes of biomass. Encore Ympäristöpalvelut environmental services operates the transfer station together with Gasum. All operators in the Helsinki region can utilize the biowaste transfer station.
Environmentally, biogas production is the best way to use biodegradable waste since it enables both the production of renewable energy and the recycling of nutrients. As part of the biogas production process, biowaste is processed into organic fertilizers for the needs of local farmers. At the same time, also the valuable nutrients contained in biowaste are also circulated, thereby reducing the use of regular industrial fertilizers on the fields.
“It’s fortunate that we found a good site for the transfer station from Encore Ympäristöpalvelut. Our biowaste transfer station creates an eco-friendly, cost-effective biowaste recycling chain for all operators in the Helsinki region. We need different biodegradable waste to increase our biogas production and believe that a well-functioning biowaste transfer station will promote our goal. We transport biowaste in large amounts from the station to our biogas plants where, as part of the biogas production process, we process the waste into organic fertilizers for the needs of local farmers,” says Rauni Karjala, Senior Sales Manager, Circular Economy, Gasum.
”The new biogas-powered truck of our subsidiary will be used in transporting Encore Ympäristöpalvelut customers’ biowaste to the biowaste transfer station. We have for years optimized the payloads and emptying frequency of our customers’ waste so that transports are as full as possible and emissions are kept to a minimum. Using biogas made from biowaste to transport the waste further reduces our transport emissions,” says Jani Rajamäki at Encore Ympäristöpalvelut.
