Gasum in brief
We are a Nordic energy company and the number one expert in the gas sector in Finland. Together with our partners, we promote development towards a carbon-neutral future on land and at sea.
Gasum is built together – six principles to create a strong foundation for the enterprise cultureShare:
Renewal is a central part of Gasum's strategy, and the energy company is taking determined and responsible steps towards creating new opportunities. Gasum has business in Finland, Sweden and Norway. Therefore, building a functional Nordic gas economy requires a strong enterprise culture and good leadership. A work community report executed in 2018, observed matters related to the company's enterprise culture, strengths of leadership and areas of noted improvement. Six renewed leadership principles were created on the basis of this report and the entire personnel of Gasum took part in it.
"Gasum is on a big transformation journey. Our significant position as a builder of the Nordic gas economy demands our commitment to a modern and dialogic enterprise culture. It is important for us to merge our leadership principles more strongly with our strategy, values and know-how. We also need to ensure that these principles are shared in every country and business operation. We wish to create an even better leadership and enterprise culture through the renewed leadership principles," says Anja Kuparinen, Vice President, HR, Gasum.
The target was to introduce leadership development as a joint project for everyone. The development project began by asking different personnel factions what good leadership meant to them in a changing operational environment.
During the conversations, similar wishes and expectations were expressed by personnel from different business areas in the group. These wishes and expectations formed the basis for the renewal of the leadership principles. As a result, six defined principles were created. These principles are closely connected to Gasum's goal of expanding the Nordic gas market and building a bridge towards a carbon-neutral future, on land and at sea, in a changing operational environment, and in co-operation with partners.
The six new leadership principles are: setting and achieving targets, focusing on solutions, giving and receiving feedback, building trust, supporting colleagues, as well as celebrating successes together. According to Kuparinen, trust and open dialogue create the basis for a good enterprise culture:
"Each and every one of us is responsible for creating mutual trust, and trust is the foundation for how we develop the company and ourselves. In addition, open dialogue that is based on trust makes it easier to give constructive feedback."
Enterprise culture is built on co-operation
Currently, new leadership principles are being utilised throughout the group. They will be visible in different staff events, recruitments, trainings, orientations and performance appraisals. The role of the management group is to ensure that these principles are being utilised in the group and across every business area. The principles support managers in discovering the right courses of action and make it possible to intervene when there are perceived challenges in leadership.
Kuparinen concludes by emphasising that everyone who works at Gasum has an important role in making sure that the principles are utilised.
"Managers play a significant part in making sure that the principles of leadership are discussed and that they are being used. However, everyone at Gasum is responsible for building our company's enterprise culture. We are only at the beginning of this journey and we need to take determined and responsible steps to ensure that these principles are being followed. These six principles are an important part of executing Gasum's strategy, and I believe that by following them, we can renew our company's enterprise culture together."
