Getting started with Gasum’s Pooling Service

What must my company do to use Gasum's Pooling Service?

The following are needed:

  • KYC Process
  • Credit-check approved
  • Contractual Agreement
If my company participates as a buyer in your Pooling Service System with a verified compliance balance, please explain what the actual process is?

Your company joins Gasum’s pool as an off-taker. Gasum sells the compliance needed (compliance units) to your company. Gasum consumes the needed amount of bio-LNG and creates the agreed amounts of compliance units. Gasum invoices these units monthly. After the reporting period and vessel verification, the off-taker defines and designates the vessels that join the pool and among which the agreed compliance units are distributed.

Pool structure and fuel sources

Who are the compliance generators in the Gasum pool and what is the pool capacity?

Gasum has signed an agreement with Finnish RoPax company Viking Line and is in dialogue with other potential generators. Additionally, Gasum will use its own bunkering and feeding dual-fuel LNG vessels (4 vessels) in the pool to generate compliance via burning bio-LNG.

The pool capacity fluctuates depending on the number of generators and what the CI score of the biogas we consume is.

What renewable or alternative fuels Gasum’s pool utilizes?

Gasum will utilize ultra-low carbon bio-LNG which is either produced by Gasum itself or acquired by Gasum utilizing its own end-to-end value chain. This bio-LNG will be utilized in the above-mentioned generator vessels (including in Gasum’s own vessels).

Is Gasum’s pool an open marketplace service where sellers and buyers participate in the form of bidding?

No, Gasum is the counterparty to both compliance generators and compliance off-takers and takes responsibility and liability as a pooling manager. Hence the Gasum pool is a closed pool where all the members will have to be individually vetted.

Pricing and invoicing

What is the invoiced unit or traded commodity?

The sold commodities or invoiced units are always tons of CO2 and these are priced in EUR. Gasum can help in determining the amounts needed, but the actual exposure or the binding unit quantity and demand must come from the off-taker.

Are there any types of fees or commissions that must be paid on top of the abovementioned compliance unit prices when using your service?

No, all costs are included in the unit price (EUR/ton of CO2).

What is Gasum’s invoicing period for the pooling service?

The annual compliance unit need is evenly distributed over the year, meaning that the total amount is divided across the months of the year. Invoicing is made in 12 monthly installments. Alternatively, our customers can pay the full amount at once.

How are the compliance unit prices settled?

Once an agreement is made the price is fixed for the agreed number of units and compliance period.

I have settled for a fixed amount, but I need now more compliance units, how does this work?

If Gasum has available compliance units, an additional purchase order with possibly different pricing is created.

Since all types of vessels and pooling participants can bank excess compliance, Gasum recommends that our customers over-shoot or marginally overestimate their compliance needs. This enables off-takers to avoid the risk of having to secure missing compliance units at a later date.

What if I have bought too many compliance units, does my company lose these when the pooling balance is settled for the year?

The off-taker can always instruct Gasum on how the surplus is banked, meaning the excess units can be banked between one or several vessels.

Verification and compliance

Do I need to use DNV as a vessel verifier or does the pool verification affect the vessel verification?

No. Pool verification does not affect vessel verification.

Does DNV affect vessel verification?

No, off-takers can continue utilizing the existing or preferred class society or verifier of their choice. DNV usage does not affect the vessel verification.

What happens if Gasum has not generated enough compliance for my company?

Gasum takes contractual responsibility and ensures that our customers are always regulatorily compliant at the end of the verification period even if this means paying the penalty on behalf of our off-taker customers.

Who has the authority to select a pool verifier?

Gasum selects the pooling verification partner (currently DNV).

Who pays the pool verification cost?

Gasum pays for the verification, this is included in the compliance price.
