The Nordic gas filling station network continues to grow – a new station for heavy-duty vehicles opens in Jönköping, Sweden

Heavy road transport across the EU is increasing. At the same time, emissions need to be cut fast. The energy company Gasum is investing strongly into the expansion and development of the Nordic gas infrastructure and offering cleaner fuel solutions for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). Today Gasum inaugurated its fourth gas filling station in Sweden. The new station is located in Torsvik, just south of Jönköping, and it offers liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied biogas (LBG) for HDVs.

In early 2019, the European Union presented new emission reduction standards for HDVs. According to the new Regulation, carbon dioxide emissions from HDVs need to be reduced by 30% by 2030. The new Regulation has increased the demand for cost-effective, low-emission fuel options for HDVs in the Nordics, and alternative fuels such as LNG and LBG are quickly becoming the norm. In addition, there is a rapidly increasing demand for low-emission transport solutions in various industries.

To support this change, the energy company Gasum has now opened a new gas filling station in Torsvik, Jönköping. The company’s fourth gas filling station in Sweden, the new filling station is located on a site leased from IKEA’s Torsvik warehouse. Gasum is planning to create a network of around 20 filling stations for heavy duty vehicles in Sweden and Finland by the end of the year, with 12 of the stations to be located in Sweden, and to introduce a total of 50 new filling stations in the Nordics by the early 2020s.

“The expanding filling station network supports logistics companies operating in Sweden that want to reduce their carbon footprint. The new filling station has a great location near Torsvik’s IKEA warehouse along the main highway in Jönköping. In addition, it’s a good continuation to the circular economy cooperation Gasum has with IKEA Finland,” states Mikael Antonsson, Director, Traffic, Gasum Sweden.

“By the end of the year, heavy-duty vehicles will be able to drive across Sweden with a low-emission fuel as the number of gas filling stations increases to 12. I’m happy about the rapidly increased demand for gas not only among logistics companies but also among logistics buyers,” Antonsson continues.

The new filling stations are targeted to the long-haul transport segment where energy consumption is highest. All of the new filling stations will be located in high-traffic areas, and they will enable significant increases in the use of LNG and LBG in heavy-duty transport. In Sweden, the stations that are already operational can be found in Västerås, Norrköping and Örebro in addition to the new station in Jönköping.

Earlier in the year, the home electronics retailer Elgiganten, Gasum and Volvo Lastvagnar launched a pilot where Elgiganten’s transport partners will fuel outgoing transport from Elgiganten’s Nordic distribution centre in Jönköping on LBG.

“As the undisputed market leader within consumer electronics in the Nordic region, Elgiganten aims to incorporate sustainability measures into every aspect of the business. During 2019, we conducted a trial using trucks powered by biogas. The results of these trials will help formulate the next round of procurement agreements, which from 2020 will include requirements for parts of the vehicle fleet to run on fossil-free fuels,” says Li Persson, communication manager at Elgiganten.

The use of LBG and LNG as fuels reduces carbon dioxide emissions and local particulate emissions significantly, which improves local air quality. Furthermore, LNG and LBG are a necessity in the transition to a carbon neutral future and at the same time they enable significant savings in fuel costs. With the use of LNG, CO2 emissions can be reduced by approximately 20% compared to conventional fuels, and with LBG the reduction is as much as 85%.
