Tallink vessel MyStar generates compliance for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool
Gasum has signed a pooling and bio-LNG agreement with Elenger, Tallink’s fuel provider. MyStar runs on bio-LNG to generate additional compliance surplus for Gasum’s pool.
Nordic energy company Gasum and Baltic energy company Elenger have signed a FuelEU Maritime co-operation agreement. Elenger is the fuel provider for Tallink Group’s vessels.
In accordance with the new agreement, Gasum provides Elenger with liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) from its Pori terminal. Tallink’s vessel MyStar uses the bio-LNG to generate compliance surplus for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool. Tallink Group operates a total of 11 passenger and cargo vessels on routes between Estonia, Finland, and Sweden.
“We are very happy to welcome Tallink MyStar into the Gasum FuelEU Maritime pool as a compliance generator. Because of this agreement with Elenger and Tallink, we are able to strengthen our FuelEU Maritime pool with yet another vessel, expanding our ability to support our customers in need of compliance. As the end of the year draws closer we are doing our best to secure as much compliance as possible,” says Jacob Granqvist, VP, maritime, Gasum.
“Tallink is setting an example for other operators in the Baltic Sea. Tallink was one of the first to invest in new technology and began using LNG as early as 2017. Elenger has supported them throughout this journey providing and bunkering LNG to the vessels, and we are happy to help take the next step now toward renewable bio-LNG,” states Margus Kaasik, CEO of AS Elenger Grupp.
“Our goal is to fully replace the LNG needs of both shuttle vessels, MyStar and Megastar, with liquefied biomethane within the next year. This means that both our passenger and freight customers can reduce their environmental impact by choosing to travel with Tallink. This remains very important for us,” says Paavo Nõgene, CEO of AS Tallink Grupp.
Cost effective and reliable pooling service
Gasum has recently started publishing the daily price of its compliance units per ton of CO2 emitted. The daily price and more information on Gasum’s pooling service can be found on Gasum's website.
The FuelEU Maritime is a European Union regulation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector. It establishes increasingly stringent requirements for the carbon intensity of energy used by ships operating in and out of EU ports, encouraging the adoption of cleaner fuels.
The regulation compels shipping companies to transition away from traditional fossil fuels towards lower emission energy sources such as LNG and bio-LNG.
Pooling offers a cost-effective way for shipping companies to address the regulation. It allows for balancing the fuel use of vessels that cannot utilize LNG or bio-LNG with vessels that can. By joining a compliance pool, multiple vessels or companies can collectively meet the FuelEU Maritime requirements.
Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool stands out in the market due to its reliability: as a bio-LNG-producer and buyer Gasum can guarantee the availability of low emission fuel to the pool. Gasum is a singular contractual partner that takes full responsibility for the compliance of all pooled vessels.
