Discontinuation of Gasum’s biogas label
Gasum has had a registered trademark known as the “biogas label,” which has been used by some of Gasum’s customers. The label has indicated that a product or service is produced using biogas or operated with biogas.

The biogas label has been available to companies that use biogas as an energy source in the production of their products or that operate gas-powered vehicles.
Gasum has decided to discontinue the biogas label. This decision is related to the European Union’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (2024/825), which allows only sustainability labels that are established by public authorities or based on independent certification.
The national implementation of the directive will begin on 27 September 2026, at which point the use of proprietary labels must be discontinued. However, according to the government proposal related to the legislative change, there will be a six-month transition period to allow the renewal of existing product packaging and to avoid unnecessary product waste. In practice, only permitted labels may appear on packaging from 27 March 2027 onwards. The legislative change is still pending approval by Parliament.
As a result of this decision, Gasum requests its customers to discontinue all use of the biogas label within the timeframe set by the authorities. The biogas label may have been used, for example, on product packaging, in printed materials such as brochures and advertisements, on websites and social media, in product displays in stores, or in vehicle branding.
We thank our customers for their cooperation. Gasum will continue its work to promote the use of biogas together with its customers and partners.
